Position Yourself to Hear God

Scripture: “But earnestly desire the best gifts.” — 1 Corinthians 12:31

Although we cannot control when spiritual gifts are released, we can position ourselves to be used by God. Scripture instructs us to earnestly desire the best gifts. The best gift is the one needed in that moment—the gift through which the Holy Spirit can minister to the person or situation before us.

Desire must be joined with attentiveness. In every situation, seek God’s counsel and listen for His voice. Many people make important decisions only after consulting everyone except the Lord. Yet God desires to lead us regarding our relationships, work, ministry, family, and future.

God has given us His written Word, but He also speaks personally to our hearts through the Holy Spirit. His personal direction will never contradict Scripture. When we spend time in His presence, our spiritual hearing becomes more sensitive. God is speaking, but we must incline our ears and make room to hear Him.

Once God speaks, place your confidence in His Word. Do not allow circumstances or the opinions of others to become louder than what He has said. If you know the Lord has directed you, act boldly and obey Him.

Obedience may sometimes appear unusual to those around you. You may not understand every detail or see the complete outcome. Faith does not require you to understand everything; it requires you to trust the One who spoke. God can do extraordinary things through a person who listens, believes, and is willing to obey.

Prayer: Lord, awaken a sincere desire in me for the gifts that will help others. Teach me to seek Your counsel before making decisions. Quiet every distracting voice and help me recognize Your leading. Give me confidence in Your Word and boldness to obey what You tell me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
